Wedding planning advice from a wedding photographer
After years of photographing weddings, I’ve gathered a lot of wedding planning advice as a wedding photographer, and these are the top five things I share with every couple I work with. And it’s usually not about timelines, table plans, or colour schemes.
It’s this: try to enjoy all of it — not just the wedding day.
Especially if you’re worried about feeling awkward about being photographed all day and not wanting your wedding to feel like a photoshoot, this might help?
So if I could sit you down with a cuppa and share my best advice, this would be it.
1. Enjoy the planning – it’s all part of your wedding
I know planning can feel overwhelming at times, but it really is part of the experience.
One of the best bits of wedding planning advice is to try and enjoy it where you can, and one of the biggest ways to do that is by choosing suppliers you genuinely like.
These are people you’ll be emailing, meeting, and spending a lot of time with – sometimes more than your guests on the day itself.
Choose people whose work you love and who you feel comfortable with. Suppliers should enhance your experience before, during and after the wedding, not add stress.
Trust your gut. If you enjoy working with them, that relaxed energy carries right through to the day and beyond.
2. Choose your getting-ready people carefully
This is a big one.
The morning of your wedding sets the tone for the whole day, so one of my biggest pieces of wedding day advice is to be thoughtful about who you spend that time with.
Choose people who keep you calm, have your back, or hype you up in exactly the right way.
And here’s the bit people don’t always say out loud: just because someone is your friend or family, it doesn’t mean they have to be with you that morning.
It’s okay to keep that space small and peaceful. You’re not excluding anyone — you’re protecting your energy.

3. Don’t let the weather ruin your day
If there’s one piece of wedding planning advice from a wedding photographer that I repeat again and again, it’s this: the weather will do what it wants.
One thing I’ve seen time and time again as a wedding photographer is couples regretting how much they worried about it.
I promise you — if you wake up the day after your wedding and realise you spent it feeling sad or stressed about the weather, you’ll regret that far more than a bit of rain.
Some of the most relaxed, joyful, emotional, and beautiful weddings I’ve photographed haven’t had “perfect” weather. They’ve simply had couples who decided to enjoy the day anyway.
4. Don’t host your own wedding
You’ve already done the hard work.
The food is amazing. The drinks are flowing. Everyone you love is there to celebrate with you.
Now it’s your turn to enjoy it.
One of the biggest pieces of wedding day advice I share with couples is this: don’t slip into host mode.
I’ve thrown parties myself and spent the whole time checking everyone else was having a great time, only to wish afterwards that I’d actually enjoyed it.
Trust your planning, let go, and be a guest at your own brilliant party.

5. Be present — your wedding day goes so quickly
This might be the most important piece of wedding planning advice I can give.
Look around. Take it all in.
Your wedding day will be filled with people you love — people who love you right back.
Notice the hugs, the laughter, and the little moments happening all around you.
Your wedding day really does go quickly. Honestly, it’s over in a flash.
If you take anything from this wedding planning advice, let it be this: pause, breathe, and enjoy it.
From someone who gets to witness these moments up close — when couples are relaxed, present and truly enjoying themselves, that’s when the magic really happens.
What is the best wedding planning advice from a wedding photographer?
After years of photographing weddings, the best wedding planning advice I can give is simple: focus on how your wedding day feels, not just how it looks.
The couples who enjoy their wedding day the most are the ones who allow themselves to be present. They trust the planning they’ve done, surround themselves with the right people, and give themselves permission to relax and enjoy the moment.
Perfect timelines, beautiful flowers and stunning venues are all lovely, but what really makes a wedding special are the real moments — the laughter with friends, the hugs from family, and the quiet seconds where you realise everyone you love is in the same place.
And from a photography perspective, those are the moments that create the most meaningful images too.
When couples feel relaxed and truly enjoy their day, the photographs naturally reflect that. It’s never about forcing moments or turning the day into a photoshoot — it’s about capturing the genuine joy of the day as it unfolds.
So if you take one piece of wedding planning advice from a wedding photographer, let it be this: be present, enjoy the experience, and trust that the moments worth remembering will happen naturally.
If any of this feels like your vibe, take a nosy at my work here and see if it makes you smile. And if you fancy a chat after that, pop me a message — no hard sell, no awkward forms, just a relaxed natter about your plans and what you want your wedding to feel like.
“Danni was the most incredible photographer for our wedding in December 2025 and was without a doubt one of our best investments we made. During our initial meeting, she immediately made my husband and I comfortable- my husband is not the biggest fan of having his photo taken but Danni made him feel at ease throughout the entire process which was one of the most important things we were looking for. During the day, she kept me and the bridal party calm throughout, even when there were stressful moments logistically! She helped do up the bridesmaids dresses, helped the groomsmen do their button holes and caught some beautiful moments on camera with our whole family. She is more than just a photographer, she made the day seamless! She was really easy to communicate with, especially with my weather worries the day before the wedding! We have some beautiful bridal portraits, intimate moments of our ceremony captured, some stunning moments of just my husband and I and lovely candid shots of the whole day. Danni worked incredibly hard to deliver us some sneak peaks for our wedding almost immediately after, even during the busy Christmas season. We were blown away by the fully gallery photos we received early January in such a stunning box. All our friends and family loved the Thank You cards that she printed as well. We would 100% recommend Danni for your wedding- she is professional, reliable and a wonderful person who captured our day beautifully. Thank you Danni!”
